Prevent Health Problems With Grain Free Dog Food
Many experts in veterinary medicine believe that dogs should be fed a balanced diet that is relatively free of carbs, and for that reason a grain free dog food is often recommended. Just as when humans go on a no-carb diet and immediately switch from eating grains like bread and pasta, similarly dogs on a low-carb diet can cut out the grains in favor of meats and vegetables. Dry pet foods, unfortunately, often contain unusually high levels of carbohydrates and very low levels of nutritious proteins, minerals, and vitamin-rich ingredients like vegetables.
Animals need protein, and their bodies are well suited to digest the kinds of protein found in meat. But the digestive system of your dog is not as efficient when it comes to digesting plant proteins such as gluten – a substance typically found in wheat products.
One good way to make sure that your dog is getting a proper diet is to read the small print on the dog food packaging, to find out what percentage of the ingredients is grain. If the grain content is too high, then you may want to consider switching over to another brand that does not emphasize carbs as much. The reason carb-based dog food is so common is basic economics. For the pet food manufacturer it is usually much cheaper to add inexpensive carbs to food, instead of concentrating on ingredients like fish, chicken, and beef that cost more.
But when you’re buying dog food, don’t just look at the price. Check your ingredients. You may wind up spending an extra dollar or two each time you purchase dog food, but if your pet is healthier then you will save a lot more money at the veterinarian. Just as eating healthy yourself helps to optimize your wellness and minimize your trips to the doctor, the same thing applies to your dog. Feed your dog the best grain-free dog food and you may find that not only does it cost less in the long run, but it makes your dog happier – which helps to guarantee your own important peace of mind.
