Pair Adult
Death of one of a pair of adult cats. If there a way to introduce a companion for the other?
Both cats were related and approx 6 years old. Although they fought from time to time they were company for each other when my friends went to work.
The younger one (male) has now had to be put to sleep due to illness. I am concerned that the older cat (female) will be lonely yet I know cats are highly territorial when it comes to new-comers.
Any suggestions please?
I had the same problem. At first I thought my surviving cat, Chloe, would be just fine, since everyone says cats are solitary.
But I think she just missed having company. She just wanted to be with me all the time and cried if I went into the bathroom. I could even hear her meowing when I left for work or school.
So I got a new kitten from the Humane Society. I think it’s easier with a kitten, honestly, because the adult cat doesn’t consider it as much of a threat. Chloe actually seemed terrified of my new kitten, but within a couple of weeks, they were good friends.
I don’t think you have to do much special, except make sure you don’t ignore your “old friend” because you’ve made a new one. You might want to look into extra advice, if you’re planning on getting an adult cat.
Oh, and quick note – you might want to get a second kitty litter box. Sometimes the old cat might not want to use the same box as the new cat, or vice vercsa. I wish someone had told me before I got my newer kitty – it would have saved a couple of unfortunate incidences!
