In the early 1600′s the Dutch navy was larger than all the other european navies combined, later the other navies got larger the Dutch, Spanish and British navy were of the same size. They were at constant war (over trade routes and colonies)
The Dutch were the largest traders with the baltic countries of all the European international trading countires. The reason for their strong precense in the baltic states was probably mainly due to their geographical position. However, for the Dutch the baltyic states were not of great interest
